Racism persists say Alaskans

FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 2001

The Alaska Commission on Tolerance held a third public meeting on racism in the state on Thursday night, as residents of Kodiak complained of continued discrimination in a community noted for its diversity.

Kodiak Island still has a significantly white population but Asian-Americans now outnumber Alaska Natives. Hispanic and multi-racial residents also live on the island.

Governor Tony Knowles (D) created the commission in response to the paint-ball attacks of three white males on Alaska Natives. One has pleaded guilty to a lesser set of misdemeanor charges and is denying he made racist statements that were captured on videotape.
