Tribe to oversee Metis cemetery

FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 2001

Pembina County commissioners today will transfer an historic Metis cemetery to the Turtle Mountain Ojibwe Tribe of North Dakota.

The state Legislature gave the county $15,000 to buy the cemetery, which contains the graves of Metis pioneers.

Some Metis in the state and in Canada had opposed the transfer because they said the tribe would not respect its Metis heritage. Tribal officials say they will recognize the Metis and Ojibwe who are buried there.

Some Turtle Mountain tribal members identify themselves as Metis, descendants of French-Canadian trappers and Indian women.
