Cherokee Nation plans memorial for teens

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 8, 2001 The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma will be erecting a memorial to four teenagers who died in a car accident last week. Smokey Mankiller, Kyle Hutchinson, Chad Craig and Erika Christie were killed when their car slammed into another vehicle near Fort Gibson. Hutchinson was driving at the time; the other car driver was not injured. The tribe will be erecting pine trees at the Sequoyah High School in Tahlequah, where Mankiller and Hutchinson attended school. Christie's twin sister was also hurt in the accident and is in the hospital being treated for her injuries. Get the Story:
