Leaders weigh in on apology

SEPTEMBER 11, 2000 Tribal leaders throughout the country are weighing in on Kevin Gover's apology last Friday. Leaders of three Connecticut tribes were generally pleased and said Gover was very sincere. Others have appeared more cautious of the apology, saying the effects of years of abuse are already done and nothing will bring lost language, culture, and land back. "It's too late. All the ones we should apologize to are gone. For my grandmother, it's no good for her," Jeanette Morrison, 61, Muckleshoot, told The Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Lloyd Tortalita, the Governor of Acoma Pueblo of New Mexico said :If we could get an apology from the whole government, that would be better." Get Gover's Speech:
