Mark Trahant: The Code

SEPTEMBER 14, 2000

Mark Trahant, a columnist for The Seattle Times, says there is a code operating behind attempts to protect salmon.

In a column today, Trahant says a plan unveiled by John Carlson, a Republican candidate for Governor of Washington, is representative of a code which doesn't recognize the treaty-protected fishing rights of tribes in the Northwest.

"Some in Washington still cling to The Code and argue that the state knows more than the Indians and that salmon could be saved by regulating tribal fisheries," writes Trahant.
