SEPTEMBER 29, 2000

A group of thirteen drummers and dancers from the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska left for Rome, Italy, on Thursday in order to take part in the canonization of Katherine Drexel, a socialite who dedicated her life to improve education for Native Americans and African-Americans.

Drexel became a nun at the age of 30, taking a vow of poverty. She used her inheritance to fund schools, including St. Augustine Mission on the Winnebago reservation.

Pope John Paul II will canonize her next Tuesday. He will use a special chalice made by a man from Zuni Pueblo of New Mexico in the ceremony.
