Obituaries: Gwich'in chief Ojibwe elder

Gwich'in Chief Moses Sam Sr. died of natural causes on Wednesday in Alaska. He was 89.

Sam was the longtime chief of Arctic Village, located just outside the southern border of the Arctic National Wildife Refuge. A memorial service was held for him in Fairbanks on Saturday and one is being held in the village today.

Also recently passing is Leech Lake Ojibwe elder Walter White, 82, also known as Porky. He was an educator and a spiritual counselor, helping carry on tribal traditions.
