Patricia Locke died last month in Arizona. At 73, she was known for her work to preserve Native languages and her efforts to start tribal colleges.

Locke was awarded a MacArthur fellowship in 1991 for her work with languages. She was a co-founder of the Native American Language Issues Institute, which became the International Native Languages Institute.

Locke also taught students at all education levels and from all walks of life.
