"John Sipes Jr. ("Your Views," Dec. 6) claimed the participants of the 1889 Land Run "took land illegally without the consent of the Indian tribes." This is wrong.

The federal government purchased land, including the area of the first Land Run, from the Creek and Seminole tribes for $1.3 million under the Treaties of Washington in 1866. . ."
