Pueblo building new church

MONDAY, DECEMBER 24, 2001

Sandia Pueblo in New Mexico last week broke ground on a new church, believed to be the first new Catholic church built on a reservation in as many as one hundred years.

The tribe's old church, San Antonio de Padua, was deemed too dangerous for worship and was closed three years ago. The church was built in 1860.

The new 8,000-square-foot facility is based on the old church but will be bigger and sleeker, said tribal officials. It will face the Sandia Mountains, which the tribe considers a church as well.
