TUESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2001

In an editorial today, The Lincoln Journal Star praises Indian Country for its "grass roots" response to the problem of Native suicide.

Pointing to various successes in developing suicide support and response programs, the paper says the approach "has kindled hope where there had been little." The paper says the approach focuses on Native culture and tradition.

The paper's opinion comes after its own reporter, Jodi Rave, authored a series on Native suicide that showed extremely high rates among youth in Indian Country.
