Cheap phones possible for many in OK

OCTOBER 3, 2000 As many as 200,000 residents of Oklahoma might qualify for cheap phone service to be offered by Southwestern Bell. The company had earlier asked the Federal Communiciations Commission to reconsider its definition of "former reservation." But the FCC rejected their request, which would have delayed implementation of the phones program. As a result much of the state is eligible for the service. However, residents must meet income requirements, which include Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, Oklahoma sales tax relief, income qualified Head Start, free school lunch program, and Bureau of Indian Affairs general assistance.
