It will take months for the Department of Interior to recover from its Internet shutdown, a senior official has told Government Executive Magazine.

The Minerals Management Service has a backlog of about 100,000 records containing 1 million pieces of data, according to the magazine. These deal with royalties owed to Indian beneficiaries.

The large backlog means MMS won't be able to reconcile payments made to account holders for months, said Milt Dial, the acting associate director for minerals revenue management.

The computer systems at MMS were given approval to restart on March 22.
