The Peabody Essex Museum in Peabody, Massachusetts, is hosting an exhibit of 71 Edward S. Curtis photographs through March.

Called "The Master Prints of Edward S. Curtis: Portraits of Native America," the photos are s platinum prints and are described as in excellent condition. Margarett Loke of The New York Times says the photos of "Indian women are as regal as any New York society matron" and Indian men "whether decked out in fancy costumes or wrapped in simple blankets, have the proud bearing and strong gaze of industrialists and bankers."

In response to criticism that Curtis' subjects were overtly staged -- often wearing clothing belonging to other tribes -- exhibit organizer Clark Worswick, who says he is is part Lakota, said the photos send the message: "I'm Indian and I'm proud to be Indian."
