The Office of Civil Rights within the Department of Education has asked school districts in South Dakota to provide data about their use of Indian-themed mascots, symbols, performances and other representations.

The request comes as the office is investigating a civil rights complaint filed against various school districts. A Native American activist sought the probe after the schools failed to move on her push to have the mascots, themes and other symbol removed.
