Parents of nearly 30 students involved in riots at a New Mexico high school may face fines and other penalties, the local school board has said.

The parents were blamed for last Thursday's fights and injuries that led to a one-day shutdown of Española Valley High School. Students returned to classes yesterday amid heavy security.

Law enforcement from four jurisdictions were called to the school last week in response to violence some attributed to gang activity. A reported 28 to 29 students are being suspended for 10 days and the school board is suggesting parents be required to spend a week in classes with their children.

The school serves students from nearby San Juan Pueblo and others from area reservations.
