A request to add an Indian Cultural Day as a school holiday was rejected by a New Mexico school district.

Lloyd Felipe, vice president of Grants-Cibola County school board, wanted the day to reflect the district's large Native population. He suggested Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday or Columbus Day be dropped.

But the school board decided against the proposal on Wednesday and said Indian students are already accommodated on September 19, which is the feast day of Laguna Pueblo. Felipe is from Laguna.
