Archaeologists working in Peru have discovered more than 2,000 well-preserved Inca mummies.

The mummies date to the late 1400s and early 1500s, prior to Spanish settlement. Researchers say they are a significant find because they can shed light on Inca culture during a critical time period.

So far, only three mummies have been unwrapped. It could take decades to examine them all.

Work was done under the auspices of the National Geographic Society.
