Kitty litter mine has more lives

They say cats have nine lives and if so, a proposed kitty litter mine in Nevada has eight more chances to go before it is out for the count.

The 24-hour, 7-day-a-week clay mine and litter plant lost one life when a local county denied the Oil-Dri company a permit to operate. But the company and opponents say the battle is far from over and that a legal test of an 1872 mining law Secretary of Interior Gale Norton wants to reform is possible.

The two clay mines from which the litter material would be processed are actually Bureau of Land Management land. The processing plant would be located on private property, which is why the company needed local approval.

The mines are located next to the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, which opposes the plant.
