President Bush's fiscal year 2003 budget requests $527 million to develop the Yucca Mountain national nuclear waste dump in Nevada.

The 41 percent increase is the largest in funds for waste disposal since 1996, according to The Las Vegas Review-Journal. In the past, funds for the project have been curtailed by Congressional opponents, a tradition expected to be carried out again this year.

Area tribes and Nevada politicians and lawmakers are fighting the site. Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham will forward his formal recommendation to Bush this month.

Nevada Gov. Kelly Guinn (R) is set to object, setting up a dispute Congress has to resolve.
