Energy bill still stalled in Senate

FRIDAY, MARCH 22, 2002 The Senate on Thursday approved a renewable energy amendment to an energy policy bill but the legislation remains stalled as Democrats battle Republicans over key issues. Included is a GOP-supported provision to allow drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) wants a vote on the issue April 9, after the chamber returns from its recess, but only if Republicans can muster 60 votes. Republicans counter that the issue should be decided by majority rule. Democrats from oil-producing states and one or two on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee are leaning towards support of Arctic drilling. Yesterday's amendment, approved 58 to 40, requires utility companies to increase usage of wind, solar and renewable energy sources. Another amendment affects a proposed natural gas pipeline in Alaska, favoring a southern route through the state. Yet another allows companies to choose which regulations to comply with when building the pipeline. Get the Story:
