Ariz. water rights case settled

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 27, 2002 The federal government has completed negotiations to settle the water rights of several Arizona tribes, the Associated Press reports. In total, the tribes will receive more than 1 million acre-feet of water per year, which is enough to serve 5 million people. The deals have to be approved by Congress, which has to resolve related issues, and the Arizona Legislature also has to agree to some provisions. Arizona's current population is about 5 million. Communities would have to enter into agreements with tribes to obtain water beyond their current usage. Get the Story:
