The Bureau of Indian Affairs has taken the lead in investigating the cause of fires on the Mescalero Apache Reservation and surrounding areas.

Arson is suspected in the blazes but not all. The off-reservation Kokopelli Fire which burned dozens of homes was accidental, investigators have concluded.

But several others, including the almost-contained 16,400-acre "5-2 Fire" appear to be more in a string of fires that have hit the reservation.
