A special session of the Alaska Legislature will begin May 15 to address subsistence.

Gov. Tony Knowles called the session after a subsistence initiative overwhelmingly passed in Anchorage. Nearly three out of four voters said they wanted to be able to vote on a subsistence amendment this November.

An amendment is needed to resolve conflicts between state and federal law. Federal law ensures a priority for Alaska Native while the state's constitution currently forbids any preference.

Knowles' proposed amendment recognizes a Natives and rural priority. Some Alaska Natives support the change while others prefer federal management.
