A federal judge on Wednesday instructed a government attorney to start identifying records related to the roundup and killing of bison near the Yellowstone National Park.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Honzel said the government can't hold back the records simply because environmental groups have filed a lawsuit on the issue. A government attorney agreed to start gathering the documents to see when the groups might be able to look at them.

Three conservation groups are opposed to a joint state-federal management plan which allows Montana wildlife officials to shoot bison that wander out of the park. The Clinton administration approved the plan to help prevent the transfer of a disease from bison to cattle.
