Subsistence hearing held

THURSDAY, APRIL 18, 2002

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee held a hearing on subsistence and fishing issues in Alaska on Wednesday.

The committee heard from Alaska Native leaders and elders who asked for help to protect their subsistence rights. Support was shown for greater tribal input into federal management issues.

Support was less marked for a state constitutional amendment to recognize a Native and rural priority to resources. The move would put the state in line with federal law and help the state gain more control.

Athabascan elder Katie John, whose court case defined for many subsistence, did not make an appearance as hoped. Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) made a brief stop and said he opposed making subsistence decisions based on race or culture.
