Colombia scraps talks with rebel group

THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 2002 The government of Colombia has ended peace talks with a rebel group that has been accused of terrorizing Indian tribes, President Andrés Pastrana said on Thursday. Pastrana gave the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) 48 hours to vacate a Switzerland-sized swath of land the 18,000-member group had been granted authority over during the negotiations. The Army may soon move in on the rebels. Indian tribes and their land have been caught in the crossfire among various rebel groups in the country. Tribal members have been recruited to join the groups and many say Indian culture is being slowly erased due to the civil conflict. Get the Story:
