Norton acknowledges Internet problems

Secretary of Interior Gale Norton on Thursday acknowledged her department was having problems with network connectivity due to a federal judge's order requiring systems and computers with access to individual Indian trust data to be disconnected from the Internet, The Denver Post reports.

"We just began last night, and we are still trying to sort out the impact," Norton told reporters at a media briefing at an Indian energy summit being held in Denver, Colorado.

Hosted by Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb, the summit ends today. Norton gave the keynote yesterday and called on tribes to embrace development of their lands.

Norton also said the Senate hasn't allowed a "fair vote" on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. She pointed out that Inupiat Eskimos stand to benefit from oil ans gas development in the refuge.

She also told the audience of about 300 tribal leaders -- who received her politely but without the same enthusiasm displayed earlier this year -- that Rep. Brad Carson (D-Okla.), the only American Indian in the House, supported his chamber's energy bill to allow ANWR drilling.
