TUESDAY, JANUARY 29, 2002

The North Dakota Supreme Court on Wednesday will hear a case to determine if the Turtle Mountain Ojibwe Tribe can be forced to turn over land to the state.

The state wants 1.43 acres of land for a dam project. As a sovereign government, the tribe contends it can't be forced to do so.

The land had been owned by a farmer. He sold it to the tribe in July 2000 for blankets and beads.
