FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2002 Making good on an earlier threat, the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin filed 20 lawsuits on land in the tribe's ancestral home of New York. The New York Oneida immediately blasted the move as "greedy" in a press release. The New York Oneida have agreed to settle a 250,000-acre land claim for $500 million and other provisions. The Wisconsin Oneida and relatives in Canada oppose the deal. In related New York gaming-land claim news, the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe of New York is considering a settlement to its long-running claim to 14,000 acres of land in order to open up a casino in the Catskills. Gov. George Pataki (R) has offered a deal, the tribe confirmed. But before he approves a compact and a land-into-trust application pending at the Bureau of Indian Affairs, he wants the claim settled.
