Quapaw Tribe seeks trust accounting

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2002

The Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma has filed a lawsuit against the Bureau of Indian Affairs, seeking an accounting of tribal trust assets.

The tribe says a "reconciliation" effort by accounting firm Arthur Andersen is not a full historical accounting. Andersen's contract only required looking at documents dating to 1973.

But the tribe says the peak years for trust management were between 1911 and 1940. Lead and zinc have been mined and the tribe wants a determination of exactly how much.
