N.Y. tribes want relatives shut out

New York tribes with pending land claims have been discouraging Gov. George Pataki from negotiation settlements with out-of-state tribes.

The Albany Times-Union obtained copies of letters written by New York tribal officials and their representatives. The letter say the tribes will refuse to negotiate or file further lawsuits if Pataki works with other tribes.

The documents point to Pataki's decision to settle land claims without involving out-of-state tribes that are part of the same suits. His move has virtually derailed a deal to end the Oneida claim.
