Tribe's heritage in doubt

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10, 2002

A dispute over heritage has the tiny Buena Vista Me-Wuk Tribe of California lacking of leadership and tribal members.

The tribe was terminated in the 1950s and restored in 1983. Donnamarie Potts formed a new government and was recognized by the Bureau of Indian Affairs as the rancheria's leader.

But it turns out Potts can't prove her descent from the tribe. Another woman, however, has been able to trace her heritage, halting plans for a casino on the 67-acre reservation.
