Senate moves to continue COPS program

FRIDAY, APRIL 12, 2002 The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday passed a bill to reauthorize the Community Oriented Police Services (COPS) program. The committee approved $1.15 billion in funding for COPS through 2008. The program officially ended in 2000. COPS was created by the Clinton administration and has been used by tribes to set up and pay for policing forces. President Bush's fiscal year 2003 budget proposed slashing $500 million in funds.
