THURSDAY, MAY 2, 2002

Federal, tribal and state law enforcement authorities have created a task force to find the person or persons responsible for more than 100 fires on the Mescalero Apache Reservation in southern New Mexico.

More than 60 have been set in the past four months alone, said U.S. Attorney David Iglesias of New Mexico. He declined to comment whether a suspect or suspects are in mind.

The tribe has set a $50,000 reward for information, up from $1,000. President Sara Misquez has reported the existence of three letters threatening more fires if she does not resign.
