Navajo royalty owners get IOUs

The Department of Interior is promising to pay thousands of Navajo royalty owners but so far all they have received is rhetoric, said Rep. Tom Udall (D-N.M.).

Udall wrote a letter last month to Secretary Gale Norton regarding the department's failure to pay trust beneficiaries for oil and gas drilling on their lands. A Minerals Management Service official told Navajo owners that the problem won't be fixed soon.

The problem is linked to the department's computer shutdown but also an MMS "reingeeering" effort, said the official.
