Mormons eye federal property

Six members of Congress, all members of the Mormon Church, are trying to transfer a national historic site to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Rep. Jim Hansen (R-Utah), the outgoing chairman of the House Resources Committee, is the lead sponsor of the bill to sell 1,640 acres to the church. He argues religious organizations in the past have obtained federal property and is accusing detractors of being anti-Mormon.

Critics say the two examples Hansen provided were very different because they involved land titles that Congress needed to clarify.
