Bush to cut jobs highway funding

THURSDAY, JANUARY 31, 2002

President Bush will propose to cut millions of dollars from job-training programs and reduce federal highway spending.

Bush will reduce $225 million in youth opportunity grants to cities to just $45 million. The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) says the grants are being streamlined into other areas.

For highway funding, a 29 percent cut from $31.8 billion to $22.7 billion is expected. This would appear to impact Indian Country funding, as tribes receive a portion of money from the larger pot of money.

Bush will release the budget next Monday.
