FRIDAY, MARCH 15, 2002

A Rhode Island lawmaker on Thursday denied a proposal to study gaming in the state was linked to his recent meeting with a competitor to the Narragansett Tribe.

Narragansett Sachem Matthew Thomas and partner Boyd Gaming met with Gordon Fox to discuss their opposition to the study. But Fox, who heads the House Finance Committee, cut the meeting short after the tribe questioned his dealings with Harrah's Entertainment, another gaming company.

Fox later admitted he has met with Harrah's. Thomas said the tribe was pressured into going with Harrah's but chose Boyd instead.
