Unions at issue in casino pact

The Seneca Nation of New York is promising to include labor unions for upcoming casino and hotel projects.

But the tribe said it won't put union provisions in its gaming compact with the state. Gov. George Pataki last year agreed that unions wouldn't be forced on the tribe.

The law which authorized Pataki to complete negotiations for the compact, however, require unions to be part of the process. Union representatives say they are confident their rights won't be ignored.

Congress is considering a bill to prevent tribes from being forced to accept unions at casinos. A hearing will be held tomorrow by the House Resources Committee.
