The nomination of Charles Pickering Sr. to the federal bench has galvanized Democrats and Republicans.

Democrats see Pickering's views on civil rights as a reason not to confirm him. Republicans are using Democrats move as a means to criticize partisanship.

Currently a federal judge in Mississippi, Pickering wrote in 1959 to support strengthen the laws forbidding interracial marriage. He has has many African-American advocates and opponents.
