The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday held a second hearing in the nomination of Charles W. Pickering for the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Civil rights activists, abortion rights groups and Democrats on the committee have raised questions about Pickering's past. It was suggested that Pickering was allied with segregationist movements.

Republicans, however, defended Pickering, who is currently a federal judge in Mississippi.
