Pataki restricting tribal contacts

FRIDAY, MARCH 8, 2002

Gov. George Pataki (R) has told state agencies and colleges to limit contact with tribes to those "recognized" by the federal government.

Pataki's spokesperson said two memos describing the policy are aimed at ensuring contacts are made with legitimate leaders. They were drafted after a flag was flown at a state college to represent the traditional government of the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation.

Indian Country Today first reported the directive last month.
