The Bush administration quietly ousted two inspectors general in February, naming replacements so quickly that similar appointees wonder if they will be next.

Luise S. Jordan was fired from the Corporation for National and Community Service even though she was told she had a good record. Roberta L. Gross was fired the same day from her post at NASA.

Inspectors general are appointed by the president but typically serve through administrations due to their independence. The Department of Interior's IG is Earl E. Devaney, named to his post by President Clinton in 1999.
