TUESDAY, APRIL 16, 2002

In its heyday, the Baltimore American Indian Center was flush with cash, operating a host of education, welfare, social and other projects with a $1 million budget.

The former American Indian Study Center is now struggling to raise funds. The center is holding a pow-wow and other events to raise $95,000 in order to match a state bond to expand its building.

The center has $15,000 so far. The pow-wow will be held August 23-25 at Catonsville Community College.

Baltimore's Native population is largely Lumbee. Lumbee tribal members moved there in the 1950s and 1960s to take advantage of employment opportunities.
