The national ombudsman of the Environmental Protection Agency resigned from his post on Monday night.

Robert Martin, a member of the Makah Nation of Washington, left because of his transfer to the EPA inspector general's office. He protested the move, which was ordered by EPA Chief Christie Whitman.

Among other investigations, Martin was recently looking into the financial ties of Whitman's husband and whether decisions she made were influenced by them.

Martin (r) is shown in the picture with Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Colo.), a chief supporter.
