Klamath Basin money cut from farm bill

FRIDAY, APRIL 26, 2002

A joint House-Senate conference on Thursday cut $175 million in funds for the Klamath Basin.

The money was included in a version of a farm bill the Senate passed. The House version did not contain the provision and it was voted out.

The money would have been used for various purposes, including aid to tribes and non-Indian farmers. Oregon's senators said they would try to include the money elsewhere.

In related news, the Department of Interior released a draft biological report yesterday on the basin. The report says an irrigation project could harm two species of fish but an official said it is unlikely that farmers will be denied water based on the "jeopardy" opinion.
