Postal rates to increase per agreement

MONDAY, JANUARY 7, 2002

The price of a first-class stamp would raise from 34 cents to 37 cents as part of an agreement made between the Postal Service and the mailing industry.

The industry accepted a rate increase, to go into effect June 30, in order to stem off price hikes the postal agency was planning as a result of September 11-related costs. The raise has to be approved by the Postal Rate Commission and the postal board of governors.

The Postal Service is also seeking $5 billion from Congress.
