MONDAY, JANUARY 7, 2002

Traditional feasts were held at 15 New Mexico Pueblos on Sunday to bring in a new year of leaders for the tribes.

Of the state's 19 Pueblos, the leaders 11 are chosen by religious elders. Except for Taos Pueblo, whose tribal council elects the leaders, the other Pueblos elect their officials by popular vote.

At Taos, some residents are challenging the council form of government, reports the Associated Press.
