THURSDAY, MAY 2, 2002

Research published in today's issue of Nature shows that rats can be controlled via remote control and made to perform otherwise unnatural actions.

The feat is obtained with three electrodes implanted in a rat Two are wired to the whiskers, to control direction, and another touches the rat's "pleasure center" in the brain to reward for a job well done.

A device strapped to the rat receives remote signals and contains a videocamera.
